Barcelona Getaway

The team got a few days off during the two week all star break, so we decided to take a trip. We thought it could be our only chance to get away during the season. We planned on flying to Rome because we haven't been there much and there's so much more that we haven't seen. Unfortunately, rain was predicted for almost the entire time we would have been there, so we cancelled that and decided to head to Barcelona for warmer weather, more relaxing and less tourism. We booked the hotel and flight and flew out the next afternoon! We had an amazing mini getaway!

We spent our 3 days there shopping, drinking wine and cava and eating at great restaurants! The only tourism we did was take a tour of Casa Batllo, the Gaudi house that we hadn't seen before. On our last night, we were able to meet up with one of Chris' old teammates from Prat and a few other friends. We had a great time catching up with them.

On Sunday, our last day there, we strolled through the Ciutadella park that was right across from our hotel and then went to a nice beach club and lounged in the sun with our cava. It was the perfect last day! Until we got to the airport...

Due to a storm in Frankfurt, a lot of flights were cancelled. We had to wait in a 2 hour Lufthansa customer service line to get a hotel booked for the night and new flights for the next morning. We spent the night at a hotel right outside of the airport and got up at 5:30 the next morning to catch our new flight. After checking in and going through security, they told us this flight had also been cancelled. Instead of waiting in another giant customer service line, we called the Lufthansa service number and got rebooked onto the next flight out. We had to go back out and get our luggage, wait in another 2 hour line to recheck our bags and go through security again. All of this only to find out that our next flight got cancelled too!!! We had to get our luggage and go through everything yet again. No one had any information on if we would be able to fly out at all that day and the Lufthansa workers were totally disorganized. Luckily, after another 2 hour line of confused customers trying to rebook and recheck their bags, we finally made it. Our flight, the last flight scheduled to go to Frankfurt that day, actually made it! After an extra night in a hotel, 12 hours in the airport and a missed day of work, we were so happy to get home! Yes, I did just write a lovely complaint letter to Lufthansa after that experience. Of course we can't hold them responsible for the bad weather, but the very poor organization and customer service are definitely not okay.

Aside from the bad ending, we really enjoyed our trip. It was great being back in Barcelona! We loved living there and it will always be a special place for us to visit.
